Groundwater Facts & Figures*


Groundwater provides:

o      About 22 percent of all freshwater withdrawals.

o      About 37 percent of agricultural use (mostly for irrigation).

o      About 37 percent of the public water supply withdrawals.

o      About 51 percent of all drinking water for the total population.

o      About 99 percent of drinking water for the rural population


Seventy-five percent of American cities depend on groundwater for at least some of their drinking water.

Fifty percent of all Americans rely on groundwater for their primary source of drinking water. For rural populations, the figure is 95 percent.

The average American uses 100 gallons of water per day.

About 75 percent of the water that comes into our homes goes down the drain again.
