North Dakota Cancer Registry Releases First Annual Report

May 31, 2000

Bismarck, ND -- The North Dakota Department of Health's Cancer Registry recently released its first annual report describing the impact of cancer on the state's residents. The publication, 1997 Cancer Incidence and  Mortality in North Dakota, reports the incidences of cancer and deaths due to the disease. "This data can be used to plan and evaluate cancer-control measures in the areas of prevention, education and early detection," said State Health Officer Murray Sagsveen. "The report provides important information for anyone who wants to see how cancer affects North Dakotans." The report includes the following statistics from 1997:

  1. About 2,900 invasive cancers were diagnosed and about 1,300 deaths reported. * The five most common cancers were prostate, breast, colorectal, lung and bladder.
  2. Each day, an average of eight residents were diagnosed with cancer and three residents died.
  3. Cancer was second to heart disease as the leading cause of death in North Dakota.

"The Cancer Registry provides data for epidemiological research related to cancer-control activities throughout the state," said Marlys Knell, coordinator of the North Dakota Cancer Registry. "The data in the report will allow health professionals to track trends, compare North Dakota's rates with national statistics, and enhance disease surveillance."
