Health Care Professional Student Loan Repayment Program

The State of North Dakota has established loan repayment programs for health care professionals willing to provide services in areas of this state that have a defined need for such services.

Eligible Disciplines:

  • Physicians
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
    • Nurse Practitioners
    • Clinical Nurse Specialists
    • Nurse Anesthetists
    • Certified Nurse Midwives
  • Physician Assistants
  • Clinical Psychologists (licensed by the State Board of Psychologist Examiners)
  • Behavioral Health Professionals
    • Licensed Addiction Counselors
    • Licensed Professional Counselors
    • Licensed Social Workers
    • Registered Nurses
    • Specialty Practice Registered Nurses

Where Providers Serve:

Providers must serve in areas of the state with a defined need for such services

Financial Benefits:

Providers working full time (40 hours/week) can enter into an agreement for up to five years and be eligible to receive the following loan repayment

Payments:

Payments are made at the conclusion of each twelve month period of service and paid directly to the lender.

Application Deadline:

Complete applications are due by March 15th.  Once received, reviewed and verified, applications will be forwarded to the State Health Council for consideration at the April or May meeting.

Conditions for Contract Termination:

  • The full repayment of the health care professional's student loan.
  • The completion of five years as a participant in the student loan repayment program.

Provider Selection Criteria:

  • Health Care professional's specialty.
  • Need for the specialty in the area.
  • Education and experience.
  • Date of availability and anticipated term of availability.
  • Willingness to accept Medicaid and Medicare patients
  • Other considerations may include:
    • length of residency in North Dakota; and
    • attendance at an in-state or an out-of-state institution

Community Selection Criteria:

Public and private entities are eligible for this program.  Site eligibility is based on the factors listed below:

  • The number of health care professionals, by specified field, already providing services in the area.
  • Access to health care services in the area.
  • The level of support from the area.
  • An entity must contractually commit to providing matching funds as noted in the financial benefits table.
  • Located in an area that is statistically underserved.
  • Located at least 20 miles outside the boundary of a city with more than 40,000 residents.
