Loan Repayment - State Programs

The North Dakota State Legislature has provided funds since 1994 to establish loan repayment programs for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, and dentists.  The programs were revised during the sixty-fourth Legislative Assembly under House Bill 1396 (Health Care Professional Student Loan Repayment Program) and Senate Bill 2205 (Dentists Loan Repayment Program).  House Bill 1396 was expanded to include advanced practice registered nurses, clinical psychologists (professionals licensed by the North Dakota State Board of Psychologist Examiners), mental and behavioral health care professionals in addition to physicians, physician assistants, certified nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners that have previously received loan repayment.  A Veterinarian Loan Repayment Program was also previously established for veterinarians working in food animal medicine.

The loan repayment program is administered by the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH). The programs were created to increase the number of providers in medicine, nursing, physician assistant studies, mental/behavioral health, dentistry and veterinary medicine in the areas of the state with defined health professional medical needs.
