A Tobacco-Free Workplace Tool Kit North Dakota's Smoke-Free Law Posters Poster 1 - Every year, 874 North Dakotans die because of the effects of smoking. Poster 2 - Tobacco is the leading cause of death in North Dakota. Poster 3 - In April 2004, the CDC issued an advisory warning people with a heart condition or those predisposed to heart disease to avoid indoor environments where smoking is allowed. Poster 4 - Exposure to secondhand smoke causes more than 46,000 deaths from heart disease and 3,000 lung cancer deaths annually in the U.S. Poster 5 - Every year in North Dakota, $247 million is spent on health care attributed to smoking, and $190 million is wasted on lost productivity. Poster 6 - Four out of five North Dakota adults do not smoke. Poster 7 - Smoking causes diseases in nearly every organ of the body.
